Sammy Marks Museum
Heritage site honouring Samuel Marks, leading figure in mining, industry and agriculture in the Transvaal between 1880 and 1920.
About this tour
The Sammy Marks Museum school tour, set on the old Zwartkoppies Estate just east of Pretoria in Gauteng, is a beautifully preserved CAPS-aligned History excursion for Grade 1–12 learners. The Victorian mansion was once home to Samuel Marks, the industrialist behind much of the Transvaal's mining, brewing and agriculture between 1880 and 1920.
Guided groups walk through original Victorian and Edwardian interiors, period furniture and family possessions, exploring the social history of the late 1800s and early 1900s — class, industry, immigration and the rise of Johannesburg and Pretoria. The gardens and outbuildings add a tangible feel to the era. The tour ends off with a fun croquet game.
Wilrien School Tours handles the full educational excursion package: bus transport (if required) from your school, museum entry, professional guiding and teacher support — making it one of the most requested heritage school tours in Gauteng.
