Maropeng & Sterkfontein Caves
World Heritage Site exploring the Cradle of Humankind — “returning to the place of origin.” 15 major fossil sites in the area.
About this tour
Take your class back to the dawn of humankind with this Maropeng and Sterkfontein Caves school tour in the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site, just outside Johannesburg in Gauteng. It is one of South Africa's most important CAPS-aligned Life Sciences and History excursions for Grade 1–12 learners.
The day pairs the award-winning Maropeng visitor centre — with its Tumulus building, boat ride through the elements and interactive evolution exhibits — with a guided descent into the Sterkfontein Caves, home to “Mrs Ples” and over a third of the world's early hominid fossils. Learners walk away with a real grasp of human origins, evolution and the 15 major fossil sites around them.
Wilrien School Tours handles the full educational excursion package: bus transport (if required) from your school, both site entries, professional guiding and teacher support — making it one of the most requested heritage school tours in Gauteng.
