Johannesburg Zoo

55 hectares in the leafy northern suburbs. Founded 1904 on land donated for public recreation.

About this tour

The Johannesburg Zoo school tour, set across 55 hectares in the leafy northern suburbs of Johannesburg, is a much-loved CAPS-aligned Life Sciences excursion for Foundation, Intermediate and Senior learners. Founded in 1904 on land donated for public recreation, it is one of Gauteng's most established educational outings.

Learners walk past more than 300 animal species — lions, tigers, gorillas, elephants and reptiles — with educators connecting each habitat to biodiversity, conservation, food chains and adaptation. Open lawns, picnic spots and clear signage make it equally good for first-time and seasoned excursions.

These are self guided tours but Wilrien Tour guides will assist with entrance and meal arrangements (If required).

Wilrien School Tours handles the full educational excursion package: bus transport (if required) from your school, zoo entry, professional guiding and teacher support — making it one of the most requested Life Sciences school tours in Gauteng.
