Gold Reef City Educational Tour
“Jozi's Story of Gold” heritage tour. Descend 75 m into one of the deepest underground mines. Thursdays & Fridays only.
About this tour
The Gold Reef City Educational Tour in Johannesburg is one of Gauteng's flagship CAPS-aligned History and Geography excursions. Running on Thursdays and Fridays, it tells “Jozi's Story of Gold” — how the 1886 discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand turned a stretch of veld into Africa's economic powerhouse.
Learners descend 75 metres underground into one of the deepest preserved mine shafts in South Africa, watch a live gold pouring demonstration, and explore the recreated heritage village with its turn-of-the-century streets, mining museum and original equipment. Migrant labour, urbanisation and the rise of Johannesburg all become tangible.
Wilrien School Tours handles the full educational excursion package: bus transport (if required) from your school, Gold Reef City entry, professional guiding and teacher support — making it one of the most requested History school tours in Gauteng.
